This course teaches students how texts “speak” to one another across context, form and language, and how these relationships shape and reshape perspectives about individual and collective human experiences.
The 'XYZ' Method
Stage 1 — Analysis of Human Behaviour
Students identify anomalies, paradoxes, and inconsistencies in human behaviour and motivation.
Stage 2 — Impact on Perspective
Students explore how texts challenge assumptions and shift the responder’s worldview.
Stage 3 — The Outcome
Students articulate the new ideas, insights, or personal reflections gained from the text. This method becomes the backbone of all reading comprehension responses.
What Students Will Learn:
1. Comparative Thinking
Students learn how to evaluate the relationships between texts through context, form and language — a core requirement of the 2024 syllabus.
2. Conceptual Connections
Students explore how paired texts challenge assumptions, invite the reader to see the world differently, and evoke emotional, intellectual and imaginative responses.
3. XYZ Method for Comparative Essays
Students apply the XYZ Method lightly but consistently:

4. Essay Structure & Argumentation

5. High‑Band Comparative Writing
Students practise writing Band‑6 comparative paragraphs using examples as a base, alongside full essays, and supported by weekly worksheets, PowerPoints, and homework tasks.
Course Structure: Learning the Foundation
Week 1 — Foundations of Textual Conversations
Understanding how texts relate through context, form and language. Introduction to comparative logic and conceptual thinking, specifically how to word it.
Mastering the 'XYZ' Method & Transferring into Written Form
Week 2 — Tensions & Paradoxes Across Texts (X‑Skill)
Identifying tensions between agency and conformity, paradoxes of motivation and behaviour, and how context shapes these elements.
Week 3 — Perspective Shift & Challenged Assumptions (Y‑Skill)
Exploring how each text reshapes perspectives and challenges assumptions differently.
Week 4 — Conceptual Outcomes & Evaluative Comparison (Z‑Skill)
Learning how to articulate the conceptual outcome of comparing texts — the Band‑6 requirement.
